Special Projects

Lousiana

The impact of Katrina on maternal and child health services has been beyond belief. Louisiana and Mississippi were already at the bottom of the list in terms of poverty and access to health care. With the physical loss and/or damage of their health care institutions, including hospitals and medical school, the loss of all but a few obstetricians in New Orleans and the recall of most of their health related grants… their health care system has been devastated.

The Birthing Project has traveled to New Orleans 5 times between September 2005 and June 2006. The first three times we took clothes and baby items and listened to what our sisters had to say. We talked to health and social service professionals, ordinary people and those who might be considered clients.

What we discovered is that everyone was affected by the hurricane. Everyone has lost somebody or something…everybody has had their family members displaced…everyone was trying to put their home back together.

During the last year, The Birthing Project has initiated the following activities:

  • Provided technical assistance to the New Orleans Healthy Start Program regarding replication of the BarberShop, our fatherhood program.
  • Delivered baby and mother clothes and supplies to the New Orleans Healthy Start. All of their program enrollees are displaced and living in temporary shelters.
  • Collected and delivered medical supplies to the Blessings Clinic.
  • Partnered with Prevention International-No More Cervical Cancer (PINCC) to provide cervical cancer screening and treatment when necessary to the 400 plus women on the cervical cancer screening waiting list.

The New Orleans Delegation will host the quarterly baby shower for about 30 babies and their mothers. This involves

  • Collecting baby clothes and supplies
  • Collecting money for the baby shower cake and refreshments
  • Traveling to New Orleans for 3 days

The Birthing Project is recruiting sponsors, medicine and medical supplies...as well as women delegates who would like to accompany us on our quarterly SisterFriend missions to Mississippi and Louisiana. Contact us.
