Special Projects

Mississippi and Louisiana After the Storm

We have not forgotten our sisters that were impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. During the last year, The Birthing Project has made five trips to Gulf. Our intention has been to take necessary aide, ask how we could best be of service and to provide sisterly support during this challenging time.

What we found were strong sisters who are taking care of their communities. Just like the rest of us, they know what they want to do and they need resources, connection and support. The addition of The Birthing Project models will give them one more tool to do their work.

Our intention is to demonstrate a strong community partnership with areas that have been hardest hit by economic and social disparities before and after Hurricane Katrina.

And, most importantly, we want our sisters to know that they are not forgotten or abandoned by our commitment to participate in the building of their health and human services infrastructure.

When Healthy Start funding was temporarily withdrawn from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, Reggie Brownhow continued to conduct outreach and keep the pregnant women connected to the Healthy Start Program. He worked for several months without pay to make sure no babies were lost on his watch.
